The Kids Are All Grown was our traditional approach to filming. Magic Door has a fantastic house setup with the drums in the main live room and plenty of isolation for our guitarist and singer in the booth. Pairing Brian with an up-close-and-personal camera angle gave a lot of energy to the shots of him on mic.

We wanted to try something a little different, and use only one camera to capture the whole band in a take. So, we swung open the iso booth doors, made some mic swaps and still came away with plenty of control over levels on the lead vocal and acoustic.

Not to say anything is “easy” when you’re recording someone new, but when you get an amazing performance with the need for only 2 mics, it’s hard to make it sound bad. Brian gave us three amazing takes, and you could have argued to use any of them.

Bringing the whole story together, we also set up a sit-down interview with Brian, and asked him about his album. We’d hooked him up with a lav mic throughout the day, and snuck in bits and pieces throughout the post-production process. Here though, the boom really shines as a crisp and clean source.

This is the :30 cutdown from the longform interview at the top of the page.
